Men On Boats

In 1869, ten explorers set off to chart the Green and Colorado Rivers, under the leadership of John Wesley Powell, a one-armed Civil War Veteran.

SPAT Programmer/Sound Design

Men On Boats is a satirical comedy on Powell’s expedition through the Grand Canyon. There is heavy emphasis to lead with satire, expose the delusions of grandeur from the men, and to pin every aspect of the voyage against them.

As the main SPAT Programmer, I pursued the idea to create a whirlpool sound effect in order to “flush” the crew away. While the scene would be tense and scary typically, this toilet flush effect really brought in the satire and comedic aspects of their folly.

The Sound Design team worked for weeks in perfecting each gag sound effect and finding the balance of funny vs important in order to sell the purpose of the show. I assisted in ambiences, small effects, and of course, the whirlpool.
